TOPS TOURNAMENT RESULTS-(GREYMOUTH MAY 19th-20th)

West Coast Hockey hosted the 2^nd annual Top of the South Club Hockey Tournament over the weekend at Greymouth’s Westurf Stadium.  Thirteen teams were entered in the event, with Cobden and Greymouth entering the local teams in both the Women’s and Men’s divisions.  Two visiting teams from Buller joined another seven from Nelson and Marlborough to make a full weekend of top quality hockey.

The round robin matches on Saturday saw most of the Coast teams struggle against well-drilled northern teams, and the Cobden Women were the only local team to make it through to the top four.  The Women’s final was fought out in a close match between Marlborough’s MGC and Arotea Kiwi teams.  With the score tied at one apiece at the end of regulation time, the match went into a golden goal shootout competition that was also unable to separate the two teams, and so the title was shared.  In the Men’s division final, Nelson’s Tasman and Waimai squads played a fast match that saw Tasman come away with a 2-0 victory with a goal in each half.

Men: Tasman 4 Cobden 0, Waimai 1 Arotea Kiwi 1, Greymouth 1 Hector 1, Waimai 3 Cobden 0, Tasman 4 Arotea Kiwi 0, Stoke 1 Greymouth 0,  Arotea Kiwi 2 Cobden 1, Tasman 1 Waimai 0, Hector 2 Stoke 0, Greymouth 3 Arotea Kiwi 1, Hector 2 Stoke 1.  Semifinals: Tasman 2 Stoke 0, Waimai 1 Hector 0.  Final: Tasman 2 Waimai 0

Women: Cobden 1 Buller 0, Beawai 2 Greymouth 0, MGC 1 Cobden 0, Arotea Kiwi 2 Greymouth 0, MGC 2 Buller 1, Arotea Kiwi 1 Beawai 0,  Greymouth 2 Buller 1, Beawai 0 Buller 0.  Semifinals: MGC 2 Beawai 0, Arotea Kiwi 1 Cobden 0.  Final: MGC MGC 1 Arotea Kiwi 1.
