ASSOCIATION NEWS: Survey spot prizes, wild weather at Under-18s, Performance Network camp and …

SURVEY TIME UNDER-18S NETWORK CAMP I was fortunate to be in Hamilton for the men’s Under-18s as well as in Wellington for the final stages of the women’s Under-18s. What a shame the wild weather was the winner on finals day.It was fantastic to witness the return of our pinnacle youth competitions after last year’s Covid-19 disruption, with 41 teams and more than 900 players, coaches and managers in attendance – not to mention all the travelling families. Well done to everyone involved – these tournaments were a great advertisement of our game. We now look forward to our secondary school tournaments later next month. On Saturday we farewelled our Olympic teams and we wish them all the best for their opening matches in Tokyo this weekend. Read more below on how to follow the action. And lastly, you will have seen our communications about the new Associations’ meeting structure which we hope will provide productive forums to keep us all connected. Anthony Crummy Hockey NZ Chief Executive After five years of waiting, the Olympics are underway this weekend with our men’s and women’s hockey sides both in action. All New Zealand’s hockey matches in Tokyo will be live on one of Sky Sport’s 12 Olympic channels, and many of the games can also be watched free-to-air on TVNZ. We encourage you to get your hockey community together to cheer on the Kiwi men against India at 1pm on Saturday followed by the women at 3.15pm on Sunday against world no.3 Argentina. See the match schedule for all the details of how to watch our teams. We are using a variety of channels to reach our hockey community, and ask that Associations please assist by advertising on your websites and social media channels as well as sending letters directly to your members and clubs. Find out more including some exciting new features in this year’s survey as well as spot prizes up for grabs. Wild weather wreaks havoc for Under-18 finals Wild weather in both Wellington and Hamilton wreaked havoc on finals day of the Vantage National Under-18 Men’s and Women’s Tournaments. The women’s final in Wellington on Saturday between North Harbour and Auckland was abandoned at three-quarter time with the title shared between the two teams, while in Hamilton the final was moved to St Paul’s Collegiate where North Harbour were 2-0 victors over Canterbury. Congratulations to all 21 women’s teams and 20 men’s teams who competed in this year’s tournament. A big thank you to the officials for all your efforts, and to our two hosts – Waikato Hockey and Wellington Hockey – for putting on two amazing events. The eight men’s and women’s teams have been confirmed to contest the top tier of the new Ford National Hockey Championships (NHC) – the first Association-based national hockey competition for more than 20 years. Find out who will play for the men’s Challenge Shield and the women’s K Cup here. The week-long Ford NHC will be held in Tauranga from 12-18 September with three tiers in both the men’s and women’s competitions. There will be promotion/relegation between the tiers. The second and third tier sides will be announced later this month, with the full draw due to be released in mid-August. Our Performance Network players have been busy training over the past three months in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Our target is four trainings a week plus a match. For some it is a case of reducing load as well as looking at ways to integrate with university and work life. After being involved in Vantage Black Sticks preparations in February and the North v South series in April, it was refreshing to hold the first network camp at the end of June. The three day national camp was the first time the inaugural selection of players have been together at a camp focused on development. Being able to align players with the ‘Black Sticks way’, check in against other players and update their development plans was incredibly valuable. The next training block begins later this month and culminates in September with the Ford National Hockey Championships – a selection event for the network. Check out the men and women in the Performance Network programme.
