Future Black Sticks U18 squads named

Following a great week of hockey in July for both the U18 Men and Women, a group of players have been selected to come together for an upcoming Future Black Sticks camp in October.

This camp offers an opportunity for those selected to immerse themselves in a “live in” environment with top coaches and support staff, where they’ll be introduced to high performance principals and styles of play needed to perform on the world stage.

Player Pathway Manager, Aaron Ford says, “Our FBS Super Camp is a great opportunity for our best talent to gain the tools and knowledge they need so they can live the habits of a high performance athlete back in their local association, ultimately taking their game to new levels.”

The timing of this camp is particularly exciting as it aligns with preparations for the Junior World Cup Qualifiers, set to take place in Auckland in January 2025, followed by the Junior World Cup later in the year.

Super Camp Dates:

7 – 11 October 2024

North Harbour and Auckland clinch Vantage National U18 titles

The Vantage National U18 Tournaments in July concluded with thrilling victories as Auckland men and North Harbour women clinched the national titles in Hawkes Bay and Christchurch respectively.

In Hawkes Bay, Auckland men showcased a dominant performance, quickly taking the lead with two early goals from Raynish Patel and Julius Sailer in the first five minutes. Angus Bannatyne added a third goal in the 37th minute to put Auckland in cruise control. Canterbury added a late consulate goal to leave the finishing score, 3-1. Wellington claimed the bronze medal after a shootout win over hosts Hawkes Bay.

In Christchurch, North Harbour girls came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Manawatu. Olivia Matson of Manawatu opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but North Harbour equalised just one minute later with a goal from Brooklyn Burton. North Harbour then took the lead in the 15th minute and sealed the win with a goal from Ashley Brown in the 52nd minute. In the bronze medal matchup between Auckland and Hawkes Bay, it was Auckland who secured a 3-1 victory, having initially led 3-0.

Sport NZ launches coaching campaign

Every day, coaches give their time to make a difference to the lives of young New Zealanders. Sport is fuelled by more than 300,000 coaches in New Zealand and over 5000 coaches throughout the Hockey New Zealand network. Most of this workforce are volunteers who play a significant role in enabling sport at all levels in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Sport NZ, in collaboration with Coach For Life, is taking the opportunity to make coaches feel recognised and valued, due to their important role in our communities.

‘Everyday Heroes’ is a campaign that highlights how important coaches are to the health and wellbeing of young people, through being the backbone of our sporting system.

Players and teams can say thanks to their coach by visiting thankscoach.co.nz to send their own personalised e-card or video message.

Say thanks coach.
