OLYMPIC HOCKEY SPECIAL: Black Sticks women look to foster belief up front today, sadly men’s Olympic campaign is over
Welcome to our Olympic Special newsletter. We'll provide daily updates from our Olympic hockey…
| NEW FORD NHC SURVEY TIME COACHING It’s been an incredibly busy few weeks with the successful hosting of the Sentinel Homes Trans-Tasman series in Palmerston North and the recent announcement of our two Olympic squads. What a proud moment for the 32 players selected to chase a medal in Tokyo.|
We couldn’t be more pleased to see club and school hockey well underway after the year we all endured in 2020. Thank you for everything you and your volunteers do to keep our grassroots game strong. We have also announced the new Ford National Hockey Championships which will see old rivalries reignited between Association-based teams.
Following on from the hockey leaders’ session back in late April and our recent calls, we’ll be in touch shortly on how we best connect with each other on an ongoing basis. We will also introduce a Chairperson’s call every couple of months following each Hockey NZ Board meeting.
And this weekend watch the Vantage Black Sticks in action against Australia in Perth live on Spark Sport.
Hockey NZ Chief Executive A big thank you to Manawatū Hockey With the hugely successful Sentinel Homes Trans-Tasman series in Palmerston North all done and dusted, we wanted to thank everyone at Hockey Manawatū for their amazing support and can-do attitude.
With your drive and passion to host the matches along with strong leadership from your local community, it showed what can be achieved in such a short period of time when everyone works together. Congratulations to Neil and all the team at Hockey Manawatū. NEW FORD NHC New Ford National Hockey Championships announced The new Ford National Hockey Championships will see our best Association-based teams striving to be crowned at each level.
The championships, hosted in Tauranga from 12-18 September, will see a tiered approach with three tiers in both the men’s and women’s competitions and promotion/relegation occurring between the tiers.
The Associations involved in each tier will be confirmed in coming weeks. Keep up to date about the Ford National Hockey Championships here. SURVEY TIME Encourage your members to give their views in July
We will again be taking part in the Voice of the Participant, an annual survey led by Sport NZ and Nielsen to assist Hockey NZ, Associations and Clubs in making evidence-driven decisions for our sport.
In July we will be distributing surveys to members via a variety of channels and ask that Associations please assist by advertising on your websites, social media channels and also by directly sending to clubs.

After a Covid-enforced break of two years since the last National Under-18s, next month’s Vantage National Under-18 Tournaments will feature the return of an Association-based competition.
The National Under-18 Women’s Tournament will see 21 Association teams descend on Wellington to compete for the Amanda Hooper Memorial Trophy. The National Under-18 Men’s Tournament in Hamilton will feature 20 Association teams competing for the Paul Ackerley Memorial Trophy.
Both events will run from 11-17 July with the draws available here. For those who can’t make it to Wellington or Hamilton, results are available via Altiusrt here. Dates confirmed for 2022 National Masters
The 2022 National Masters Tournament will be held from Sunday 20 February to Saturday 26 February. The tournament has been moved a week earlier than this year’s scheduled dates to avoid a clash with the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at the neighbouring Bay Oval.
The change of date will ensure full access to the hockey facility including the village green area and a fully operational third turf.
