SCHOLARSHIP SURVEYS WORKSHOPS & PROGRAMMES COMMUNITY UPDATES Tēnā koutou katoaIt’s hard not to feel frustrated with the latest lockdown disruptions, just as we were heading into the business end of the club hockey season, finalising 29 Secondary School hockey tournaments across the country and planning the Ford National Hockey Championship. We learned through our previous lockdowns and the challenges they presented, it is our connectedness and determination that is our strength, and we know this will help us all navigate the uncertainty ahead again. Thanks to everyone for the way you’ve approached these past few weeks. Our calendar has been impacted by the recent Delta outbreak forcing the cancellation of the Secondary Schools Winter tournament week and the postponement of the Ford National Hockey Championship. We know that some club hockey across the country has also faced postponement. We look forward to working with you all to get back to hockey as soon as it is safe to do so. On other fronts, our Olympic players, coaches and management are now home with their loved ones. This ends an almost two-month journey from Perth through to Tokyo and returning to MIQ in Aotearoa. We are extremely proud of how our teams carried themselves across their campaigns, and the resilience they’ve shown. While we didn’t achieve the results we were hoping for, both teams played with real determination, passion and tenacity. We are now concluding our debrief of the campaign to explore all learnings and opportunities. Recently we have commenced a project to explore the steps we can take to ensure we have the best high-performance system and pathway, to achieve sustained and balanced performance into the future. I look forward to sharing more on that with you shortly.Noho ora mai / Stay well and look after yourselves. Anthony Crummy Hockey NZ Chief Executive Ford NHC postponed to November The Ford NHC will now be held on November 14-20 providing it is safe to do so. While we know this revised date may not suit everyone, we tried to find the best possible date that would work for most. Please get back to Regan to confirm entries by Friday 10 September. The scholarship aims to provide support to young women from all kinds of circumstances and at different stages of their development, to unlock their talent and enable them to live their biggest life with sport as their guide. Hockey has yet to have a young female granted a TDF Scholarship so it would be great to see one! If you know of someone in your Association that meets the criteria please pass on this information in the link here. Applications should be sent to Bryce Collins, Athlete Pathway Manager at Hockey NZ at bryce.collins@hockeynz.co.nz by Friday 11th October 5pm. Nielsen and Sport NZ are now processing and analysing the data. The results are due to be released in November. Hockey New Zealand will share these insights through a variety of channels as we look to address any challenges and take advantage of opportunities. Finally, for those who participated, we will announce the winners of the individual and club prizes shortly! To gather insights, an anonymous questionnaire aimed at Parents and/or Caregivers of youth hockey participants between the ages of 7 to 16 years (as of the beginning of this year, 2021) has been developed. We’d greatly appreciate you sharing with your communities so we can gather as many valuable insights as possible. Fill in the questionnaire here and go in the draw to win 1 of 5 prizes including $100 Kookaburra Vouchers and Signed Black Sticks Gear by September 5! Applications for the Hockey NZ Trainer Programme close on September 5 and we welcome your support to share this with your staff and wider hockey community. The Trainer Programme is for individuals who have the knowledge and skills to develop our coaches and enhance our coaching system. Please note this is NOT a Coach or Developer programme. Information about the specific knowledge and skills of a Trainer are provided in the article below alongside the application form. Click here for the article and application link. A Hockey NZ Facebook reminder post was also posted on September 1 for you to share too. Small Sticks Kit Subsidy Just a reminder (once lockdown permits) the subsidy scheme (discounted kits) is still available for those Associations prioritising the in-school programme. We allocated up 35 kits Nationally which there are still a fair few available for the remainder of 2021. For all Kookaburra kits questions please contact tama.jones@hockeynz.co.nz. Indoor Hockey Update The Indoor Hockey Advisory group has had a full day planning session to map out the development of the indoor game. Mike Mayo is leading the events as part of the Advisory Group and coordinates the Super Indoor Challenge Tournaments, the next event being the U18 Men & Women scheduled for Napier in late October. If you know anyone in your community interested in the indoor game format, please ask them to get in touch with Tama Jones (tama.jones@hockeynz.co.nz). With our intent to stay responsive and relevant as a sport, we want to continue to build on how we monitor and review what we deliver. The HNZ Community team have put together templates to support Associations capture insights from participants (players/coaches/officials) in the youth space. Hopefully this will be of some help for those do not have something set up already.
