OLYMPIC HOCKEY SPECIAL: Black Sticks women aware of Spanish threats, men rue missed opportunities

Welcome to our Olympic Special newsletter. We’ll provide daily updates from our Olympic hockey teams as they compete for glory at Tokyo 2020. WOMEN VS SPAIN WEDNESDAY 28 JULY2:45 PM | SKY SPORT 8 (Tokyo 6) MEN VS AUSTRALIA THURSDAY 29 JULY12:15 AM | SKY SPORT 5 (Tokyo 3) Black Sticks Women’s Head Coach Graham Shaw is in no doubt how tough today’s game against Spain will be especially as their opponents are without a win in Tokyo so far. “We’re very aware of the threats Spain possess. They were World Cup bronze medallists in 2018 so they’re a very good side with players with multiple Olympics experience. They’re technically really good and very dangerous individually.”Shaw said they wouldn’t be taking anything for granted despite the Spanish being at the bottom of the Pool B table. “They probably haven’t hit their straps at this tournament so far. Without any points on the board they’ll be desperate so we’ll have to match that intensity and desire to win the game.” Check out Shaw’s thoughts on the “ugly” win over Japan and how pleased he was to have captain Stacey Michelsen back on the pitch here. The Black Sticks men have held on for a 2-2 draw with a determined Japanese side in their third pool match in Tokyo. The draw at the Oi Hockey Stadium yesterday kept the Kiwis quarterfinal hopes alive but was not the result the team would have been looking for against the 15th-ranked Japanese.
