OPENING ROUNDS OF PREMIER HOCKEY LEAGUE PUT ON HOLD DUE TO COVID-19 |
As you were aware, the inaugural Premier Hockey League was due to start next Thursday (20 August). Given the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19, Hockey New Zealand has decided to postpone the first three rounds of both the men’s and women’s league, which were due to run between 20 and 30 August. We are currently awaiting further information from the Government on the Covid-19 alert levels. Next week we will provide an update on the start date of the league. |
SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT UPDATE |
Hockey New Zealand, in partnership with School Sports New Zealand, is carefully monitoring the Covid-19 outbreak in Auckland and how it may affect the Secondary Schools Tournaments scheduled from 31 August. We are putting the necessary steps in place to be able to look at running Secondary Schools Tournaments across New Zealand if the country is at Alert Level 2 when these tournaments are due to begin. At Alert Level 3, we will NOT be able to run the Secondary Schools Tournaments. We will continue to consult with school principals around our ability to run the tournaments at Alert Level 2 and what the viability of these tournaments will be for the schools if New Zealand is at Alert Level 2. We aim to provide you with another update by the end of the week around the status of the tournaments and what safety measures will be put in place. Please continue to stay safe and practise good hygiene measures during this time. |
COMPETITIONS MANAGEMENT PLATFORM – SEEKING ASSOCIATION INPUT |
Hockey New Zealand is sourcing a competitions management platform that we will integrate into our member management/CRM system. We have shortlisted potential vendors and they presented to us last week. While we were impressed by the presentations and they covered our requirements that we listed in the original tender document, we want to be absolutely certain that the system we select has the ability or potential to create efficiencies and can handle the varying different scenarios that occur for our competitions officers in a typical working week. This way we will be able to prioritise, not just our core basics, but also functionality for future development. Therefore, it would be helpful if your association’s competition officer could contribute to this technology project by emailing Rachel a couple of detailed scenarios of the tasks they undertake in the competition role, including process, considerations, challenges, gaps, what works well and what doesn’t. Once we have a list of scenarios, we will collate these and approach the companies to enquire if their systems can serve the various scenarios and if so, how does this currently operate or if development will be required and likely timelines. Please send through any scenarios that your association has to contribute to rachel.minton-smith@hockeynz.co.nz as always, if you would like more information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Rachel. |
TANIA DALTON FOUNDATION – SCHOLARSHIP |
The Tania Dalton Foundation, created in honour of the sporting legend whose presence would fill the room, has been established to make a meaningful impact on the lives of budding young kiwis, guiding them to lead their biggest life – as Tania did. The scholarships aims to provide support to young women from all kinds of circumstances and at different stages of their development, to unlock their talent and enable them to live their biggest life with sport as their guide. Included in the criteria is the ability to demonstrate a significant level of financial and/or circumstantial hardship. Hockey has yet to have a young female granted a TDF Scholarship so it would be great to see this change! If you know of someone in your Association that meets the criteria please pass on this information and encourage an application. |

10 GOLDEN RULES FOR BEING AN AWESOME SPORT PARENT |
Be Sportive is a campaign aimed at helping sports parents create a better environment for our young athletes. Sadly, we’re too well aware of the extremes of poor parent behaviour in our youth sports environment. From those crazed sideline bullies, and those who live vicariously through their kids to the extent they even attach their own self-esteem to how their kids perform. While hopefully, this movement can curb that extreme poor behaviour, BeSportive.Kiwi is for the vast majority of sports parents and coaches who just need some helpful advice (with a bit of ‘corrective behaviour’ along the way!) to better navigate our young athletes through their rollercoaster youth sports journey – and foster a lifetime love of playing sport. Could we please encourage you to share this campaign with your communities. |
