SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENTS WRAP UP FOR 2020
The 2020 Secondary Schools tournaments came to a close on Friday last week, despite the COVID 19 enforced changes these tournaments went through this year, once the hockey got underway the spirit of the game and the camaraderie and rivalries that existed between the local schools made for an enthralling week.   It was fantastic to see 154 schools and more than 2000 participants come together at the different tournaments throughout the country to play some top-quality hockey. Seeing the year 13 students get an opportunity to represent their school for the final time was outstanding after what has been a tough last year at school for the senior students across the country.   CLICK HERE FOR THE MEDALISTS AND FULL ARTICLE
WAIKATO HOCKEY TO FOCUS ON EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR YOUTH
In response to an emphasis on fun and skill development within youth sport, Waikato Hockey has taken a positive step forward by redesigning their age group Development Programmes for U14 and U16 participants. Based on a holistic approach and the needs of the participant, their Development Programme will provide increase access opening entry up to all, as well as a focus on quality coaching all wrapped up in a fun-filled experience.    The programme aims “to allow players to grow at their own pace and keep early talent as well as late bloomers engaged in hockey for a lifetime, whilst providing an opportunity to excel when the time is there.”   The shift aligns to the Balance is Better approach (https://balanceisbetter.org.nz/) which aims to dispel three significant behaviours that have emerged in youth sport; 1. High-Performance behaviours are creeping into youth sport 2. There’s too much pressure on being the best and winning. 3. Young people are forced to specialise in one sport too soon. If you have any questions regarding their Development Program, you can contact Reiner Vellinga at reiner@waikatohockey.org.nz.

TANIA DALTON FOUNDATION – SCHOLARSHIP
The Tania Dalton Foundation, created in honour of the sporting legend whose presence would fill the room, has been established to make a meaningful impact on the lives of budding young kiwis, guiding them to lead their biggest life – as Tania did.

The scholarships aim to provide support to young women from all kinds of circumstances and at different stages of their development, to unlock their talent and enable them to live their biggest life with sport as their guide.

Included in the criteria is the ability to demonstrate a significant level of financial and/or circumstantial hardship. Hockey has yet to have a young female granted a TDF Scholarship so it would be great to see this change!

If you know of someone in your Association that meets the criteria please pass on this information and encourage an application.

10 GOLDEN RULES FOR BEING AN AWESOME SPORT PARENT
Be Sportive is a campaign aimed at helping sports parents create a better environment for our young athletes.    Sadly, we’re too well aware of the extremes of poor parent behaviour in our youth sports environment. From those crazed sideline bullies, and those who live vicariously through their kids to the extent they even attach their self-esteem to how their kids perform.   While hopefully, this movement can curb that extreme poor behaviour, BeSportive. Kiwi is for the vast majority of sports parents and coaches who just need some helpful advice (with a bit of ‘corrective behaviour’ along the way!) to better navigate our young athletes through their rollercoaster youth sports journey – and foster a lifetime love of playing sport.   Could we please encourage you to share this campaign with your communities.
